Course Overview

This is our most popular English course, designed for all levels. General English (GE) is a fun, interactive class which prepares you to use English in the real world. At AIEL you will learn how to communicate with native English speakers by improving your speaking, listening and pronunciation.

This course is an ideal way to develop your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills for everyday use. Choose between Standard and Intensive programs to improve your general English language proficiency for employment, higher education or travel purposes.

Classes are available at five levels graded from Elementary to Advanced, with each cycle lasting 12 weeks.

Target Group

This is for students wishing to improve their basic English skills, they may come for a holiday or to improve their English to help job prospects in their own country.

Many use General English as a pathway to IELTS or English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

Entry Requirement

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Elementary English language level or above
  • Student, Working Holiday or Tourist visa

Course Levels

GE is offered at five levels (GE level 1 for Elementary up to GE level 5 for Advanced).


This course offers rolling starts to suit the availability of your learning schedule. Student orientation is held every Monday.

What you will study

General English course content helps you develop the full range of English language skills including:

You will learn via class activities through a mix of individual and small group work.


Students are awarded a certificate showing their English level.

Study Pathways

General English will offer you three options:

  • Option 1: GE + VET Course for Certificate IV or Diploma or Advanced Diploma = Employment outcome
  • Option 2: GE + English for Academic Purposes (EAP) = Study at University
  • Option 3: GE + IELTS Preparation Test = Employment outcome

Sample Timetable

Note: Timetable is based on 20 hours per week (10 hours of Core General English and 10 hours of options).

You will be required to undergo an initial pre-training assessment to have your language ability assessed to determine which course level you are best suited to prior to enrolment. You must also be 18 years of age or above on course commencement.

Step 2: We will send you a Letter of Offer including all the enrolment conditions.

Step 3: When you accept it and return a signed copy and confirmation of payment, we will secure your place in your chosen course. You can pay your fees by electronic bank transfer OR credit card. Your Letter of Offer will include information about exact amounts due, and when you can pay them.

Step 4: AIEL will send you an Acceptance Letter confirming your course place together with information about your Orientation Day at your chosen campus including what time you need to arrive and what you need to bring. If you are applying for a student visa, AIEL will also send you a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) so you can apply for a visa at your closest Australian immigration office.
